Financial Counseling An Educative Counseling Process

1. â€Å"Financial counseling is a short-term, educative process concerned with helping people to help themselves through the application of financial information, education, and guidance to specific situations† (Wall, 2002, p. 17). â€Å"The principal aims of financial counseling are as follows: (1) To assist clients in clarifying issues, resolving problems, and pursuing goals; (2) To empower clients with the information, education, and guidance they need to act appropriately on their own behalf; and (3) To support clients in their efforts to identify, access, and utilize resources that can help them address their needs and promote their ultimate financial wellness† (Wall, 2002, p. 17). Financial counseling is an educative counseling process because the whole purpose is to inform the client on what they can do to help their financial problems or prevent them. The goal is for the client to be able to help themselves through financial matters without assistance needed, once financial counseling has ended. Once these concepts are learned, the financial counselor is no longer needed. 3. Opportunity costs involves giving up something to do something in return. For example, an individual has $20 to spend. He or she wants to go out to eat and to the movies. The opportunity costs involved here would involve the decisions made about these two. The individual could have a cheap fast food meal and go to the movie.
